Health Canada wants to end the use of products containing strychnine for ground squirrel control following a re-evaluation by its Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) which had environmental concerns about the potential poisoning of non-target animals. Health Canada had opened a 90-day public consultation that concludes on September 27. The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA) is concerned because there is currently no adequate alternative to strychnine for controlling the overpopulation and infestation of Richardson’s Ground Squirrels (RGS), which can cause significant damage to agricultural operations in Saskatchewan. The SSGA is also disappointed that this consultation period took place during the peak of agricultural activity.
