Stock Growers 104th AGM Offers Learning & Lobbying

The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA) wrapped up its 104th Annual General Meeting in Moose Jaw on Tuesday.

“Our theme was Change, Challenge, Opportunity,” said SSGA president Shane Jahnke. “That pretty much sums up ranching life right there.”

Members attended learning sessions that will equip them to deal with evolving markets and changes to production practices. They also passed 11 resolutions brought forward by the grassroots membership.

Beef Drive Awarded Funds from Elanco's 100 Communities Initiative

Elanco’s vision is Food and Companionship Enriching Life. It’s at the core of what they do and they are proud to be a cause-driven organization. Elanco is committed to help break the cycle of hunger in 100 communities across the world by the end of year 2020. To achieve this, they have partnered with United Way Worldwide and have impacted 72 communities to date by providing resources and support to help local, sustainable project have a long term impact.

The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA) launched a Beef Drive during the fall of 2016 to help out Saskatchewan’s food banks. Members were able to help by contributing an animal, or by donating cash to defray the cost of processing. The meat is processed into hamburger for distribution through food banks across Saskatchewan. Gord Roger, Beef Business Unit Manager of Elanco Canada, identified SSGA as a potential candidate for Elanco’s 100 Communities initiative. It was announced June 12th that SSGA was selected as a winner.

Government of Canada Announces $4.47 Million for Cattle Industry in Saskatchewan

May 26, 2017 - Saskatoon, Saskatchewan - Western Economic Diversification Canada

The Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association (SCA) is partnering with the University of Saskatchewan (U of S) and other stakeholder groups to build the Livestock and Forage Centre of Excellence (LFCE) near Saskatoon with the support of a $4.47 million investment from the Government of Canada.

David Lametti, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for Western Economic Diversification Canada, made the announcement today at the University of Saskatchewan.

The LFCE will consist of two new facilities on U of S land designed to address forage, cow-calf, beef cattle, and environmental research. Once complete in 2018, the LFCE will benefit industry and all Canadians through improvements to beef quality, food safety, productivity, and environmental sustainability.
