Water Security Agency Forage Program 2017 helps producers convert croplands to perennial pastures

In this program landowners convert croplands to perennial pasture and sign voluntary agreement with Water Security Agency (WSA) to maintain the pasture for a period of ten years. WSA reimburse landowners up to $35 per acre for seed costs. Landowners provide in-kind receipts at a rate of $35 per acre for labour and equipment. Forage conversion help retain existing wetlands within the project area, and provide upland nesting habitat for waterfowl.

Watershed stewardship groups work with the interested producers for project implementation. They extend help for eligibility check for specific land locations and prepare/submit landowner agreements to WSA. Watershed stewardship groups receive fees for this service.

Certain forage seed species are ineligible for WSA forage program, which include smooth brome, sweet clover, quack grass, Kentucky blue grass, timothy, reed canary grass and crested wheatgrass.

Land locations within the North American Waterfowl Management Plan (NAWMP) landscapes are eligible. Contact watershed stewardship groups or WSA (306-787-8577) for eligibility check of your land locations by December 15, 2017.
